Hard drive failure signs you should never ignore
Drives rarely die without warning. They complain first, usually for weeks. Most people only notice in hindsight.
Almost every drive that reaches us for recovery had been showing hard drive failure signs for weeks. The owner noticed something was odd, but nothing had actually broken yet, so nothing got backed up.
The sounds that matter
If your laptop still has a spinning mechanical drive, listen to it. A steady hum is normal. A rhythmic click, a repeated buzz, or a grinding noise is not.
Clicking usually means the read head cannot find its position and keeps resetting. That is mechanical, it gets worse with every power cycle, and it is the one case where the right move is to switch the machine off now and stop using it.
The behaviour that matters
Files that take an age to open, then open normally the second time. Folders that hang Explorer. Programs that freeze at random and recover after a pause.
Those pauses are the drive retrying a sector it cannot read cleanly. Furthermore, they usually spread. What starts as one slow folder becomes a slow desktop.
Blue screens that mention a disk error, or a machine that suddenly cannot find its boot device and then finds it again after a restart, are late-stage warnings.
Check the health data
Every modern drive records its own condition. Install a free SMART monitoring tool and look at three values in particular: reallocated sector count, pending sector count, and uncorrectable sector count.
Zero across all three is healthy. Any number above zero in pending or reallocated sectors means the drive has already found damage and started working around it.
Backblaze publishes failure statistics from well over two hundred thousand drives, and their quarterly reports show clearly that failures cluster early and then again after about four years.
What to back up first
If you suspect the drive, do not run a disk check. Copy your data off first, because a scan makes the drive work hard and can finish it off.
Take the irreplaceable things first. Photographs, documents, anything from a phone that has since been wiped. Applications can be reinstalled. Your daughter’s first birthday cannot.
If it is already too late
Stop using the machine and bring it in. We image the drive before touching anything, so recovery work happens on a copy and your original never gets worse. That process is explained on our data recovery page, and if the disk is still readable, hard drive repair may be the cheaper route.
What an SSD does instead
Most laptops sold in the last few years have no moving parts, so none of the noises above apply. That does not mean an SSD gives no warning. It gives different ones, and they are quieter.
Watch for files that will not save, a drive that has silently switched itself to read only, files that open corrupted when they were fine last week, or a machine that stops seeing the drive in the BIOS and then sees it again after a restart. Any of those means back up now.
SSD health is reported differently too. Instead of reallocated sectors you are looking at percentage used, available spare and media wearout. A free monitoring tool will show them.
The important difference is the warning window. A mechanical drive often limps along for weeks. An SSD tends to go from mostly fine to completely unreadable much faster, and once the controller fails there is often nothing a recovery lab can do. So an SSD makes backups more important, not less.
How long have you got
There is no honest answer to this, and anyone who gives you a number is guessing. Some drives run for another year after the first bad sector. Others fail the same week.
What does tell you something is the direction of travel. Check the pending and reallocated sector counts, note them down, and check again in a week. Numbers that sit still are a drive you can plan around. Numbers that climb week on week are a drive that is actively getting worse.
The practical rule we give people: back up today, and plan the replacement within the month. Not because the drive will definitely fail in that window, but because the cost of being wrong is so lopsided.
A backup that actually survives this
A second folder on the same laptop is not a backup. Neither, on its own, is a cloud sync folder, because sync is faithful: delete a file or corrupt it and the cloud copy is deleted or corrupted too, often before you notice.
What works is boring. Two copies on different devices, and one of them somewhere else physically. An external drive that lives in a drawer and gets updated weekly, plus a cloud copy of the things that would genuinely hurt to lose, covers almost every realistic disaster.
Set it up on a quiet evening while everything is still working. Nobody has ever regretted this and plenty of people have regretted the alternative.
What not to do with a suspect drive
Do not run a disk check or repair scan. It makes the drive work its hardest at exactly the moment it is least able to, and it can turn a recoverable drive into a dead one.
Do not keep restarting the machine to see if it comes back. Every power cycle on a failing mechanical drive is another chance for the head to touch the platter.
Do not put it in the freezer. That advice is from an era of different drive designs and it now mostly adds condensation to your problems.
And do not run recovery software on the original drive. Recovery should always happen on an image, so that a failed attempt costs you nothing.
Common questions
Can you recover data from a clicking drive?
Sometimes, but the odds fall with every minute it stays powered. Switch it off and bring it in rather than trying again at home.
Does a slow laptop always mean a failing drive?
No. Heat, a full drive and background software all cause slowness. A drive fault usually shows as pauses and freezes rather than steady sluggishness.
Is a new SSD worth it on an old laptop?
Usually yes. It is the single biggest speed improvement available for the money on any machine still running a mechanical drive.
My drive shows one reallocated sector. Do I replace it?
Not necessarily. One that never changes is tolerable. Watch it weekly. If the count climbs, replace it.
Will you keep my old drive?
Only if you want us to. Otherwise it goes back to you or is wiped and disposed of properly, whichever you prefer.

Switch it off and bring it in. Every power cycle on a failing drive costs you data.
