Laptop not charging? Which of the three faults you actually have

Battery, charging port, or the adapter itself. They look identical from the outside, yet they cost very different amounts to fix.

A laptop not charging is the most common fault that walks into our benches. However, the phrase covers three completely different problems. One costs very little. One costs a fair amount. The third is the expensive one.

Start with the cheapest suspect

Test the adapter first. Chargers fail far more often than laptops do, because the cable flexes every day near the plug. So look closely at the point where the cable meets the brick and the tip.

Is there a light on the adapter? If it is off, or it flickers when you move the cable, you have found your fault. Borrow a known-good charger of the same rating and try again.

Roughly a third of the machines we see for a laptop not charging need nothing more than a new adapter.

Then check the port

Plug the charger in and wiggle it gently. If the charging light flickers on and off, or it only charges when you hold the cable at an angle, the port is loose on the board.

This happens because people trip over cables, or charge with the laptop on a bed where the plug gets pushed sideways. Consequently the solder joints under the port crack.

A port is a repair, not a replacement. It is soldered back or swapped at component level, which is far cheaper than a new board. Our Lenovo laptop repair page covers how we handle this on ThinkPad and IdeaPad models.

Finally, the battery

If the machine runs fine on mains but dies instantly when unplugged, the battery is finished. Similarly, if it charges to 40 percent and stops, or reports “plugged in, not charging”, the cells have degraded.

Batteries are consumable. Most last three to five years, and Windows can tell you the truth about yours. Open Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the file it creates. Compare “design capacity” with “full charge capacity”.

If full charge capacity has dropped below about 60 percent of design, replacement is reasonable. Battery safety guidance from the Consumer Product Safety Commission is worth reading if yours is swollen.

When it is the board

Occasionally the adapter, port and battery all test fine and the machine still will not charge. In that case the charging circuit on the motherboard has failed.

Many shops quote a whole new board here. That is rarely necessary. We trace the power sequence and replace the failed component instead, which usually costs a fraction. Our repair services page explains the process.

What to do next

Work through it in that order. Adapter, port, battery, board. Each step costs you nothing but a few minutes, and it narrows the price range considerably before you speak to anyone.
