Cracked laptop screen? What to check before you replace it

Once a laptop screen cracked, the panel needs replacing. There is no repair for it, because the layers inside are bonded during manufacture and cannot be separated. So the real question is not whether to replace it, but what else took the impact.

Why a laptop screen cracked matters beyond the glass

A drop hard enough to crack a display usually bends the lid frame slightly. Consequently the new panel sits under tension, and it can crack again within months. That is the single most common reason a screen fails twice.

Hinges take the same shock. Furthermore, a stiff or loose hinge slowly pinches the display cable every time you open the lid, which produces flicker months later that looks like a brand new fault.

Three checks worth doing yourself

First, close the lid and look along the edge. Does it sit flush all the way round, or does one corner lift? A lifted corner means the frame is bent.

Second, open and close it slowly. Both hinges should move together with even resistance. If one is stiff and the other loose, they need attention alongside the panel.

Third, connect an external monitor. If the external picture is perfect, the board and graphics are fine and the damage really is confined to the lid. Our guide on a laptop black screen covers that test in more detail.

Can you keep using it?

For a short while, yes, provided the crack is not spreading and no liquid crystal has leaked. However, cracks travel. Every open and close flexes the panel a little more.

If you can see black spreading ink or coloured bleeding, stop using it. That is the liquid crystal escaping, and it will cover the usable area within days.

Matching the right panel

Panels are not interchangeable across a model range. Resolution, brightness, refresh rate, connector type and whether the screen is touch enabled all vary within the same laptop family.
